Hank Got Neutered :(

Last week I came home to a furry face filled with guilt and excitement. I always come home for lunch to let Hank out to go potty and play. Many days my roommates also hang out with him for a few hours. So, like usual, I took him out of our bedroom during lunch and put him back in the room for the afternoon. When I came home that night after work, though, disaster had struck.

St. Bernard Hank tore off trim

My guess as to why he did this destructive behavior is because he was hungry. He didn’t eat much for lunch, even though I gave him food. I also found the bone that’s sitting next to him in the picture in our closet. I think he smelled the bone and tried to get through the wall to gnaw on it. We have three doors in our room: the bedroom entry, the closet, and the bathroom. Of course, he chewed on the trim around ALL three doors.

I guess I need to give him another hand-woven dog toy that I sell on Etsy!

St. Bernard with collar after neuter

I hate to say we neutered him as a punishment for destroying our bedroom trim… but, we did neuter him partially to calm down the destructive behavior. This isn’t the first time he’s chewed on something in the house, it’s just never been this bad. We were going to neuter him after he bred with a neighbor dog that is a St. Bernard-Husky mix. They would’ve had adorable puppies, but it was time.

St. Bernard with Cone from Neuter

He’s doing surprisingly well with the “lamp shade” or Elizabethan cone. I thought he would hate it, try to lick his stitches all the time, and be really sore. Instead he rarely licks, so I only have the cone on him while I’m at work and can’t watch him. He also has had a ton of energy, which is hard since he’s not supposed to run or jump with stitches.

I'd love to hear your opinion (good or bad)!
