Mine & my sister’s joint baby shower
My younger step-sister is having a baby about a month before me. She’s having a boy named Zerrick and I’m having a girl named Elyse. Since our due dates our so close, we asked to just have one joint family shower, which got pretty big. My mom invited men and women, so that grew the list pretty significantly. Our childhood neighbors and some close family friends attended as well.
I did not like opening wedding gifts in front of so many people, so I was dreading that part of the shower. It just seems so self-indulgent and because I’ve recently been trying to practice more minimalism, the amount of stuff seems ridiculous.
However, it was different with a baby. This time I was opening for Ellie. As our first child, she had nothing to begin with and I don’t know exactly what a baby needs. Turns out, there are a lot of things they can use. People were there to celebrate her and wanted to be there. Sometimes I feel like people are forced to attend showers, but if they didn’t want to go, they wouldn’t. Also, I have found some people are offended when they are not invited.
Another reason opening presents at the baby shower wasn’t so bad was because my sister and I opened them at the same time. This made it go by faster and less of the attention was on me. Plus, with so many people, a lot of them talked while opening.
Tyler was not excited at first to attend a shower and open gifts, but as you can see, his red Solo cup helped make the day better!
I feel so blessed to not only have received cute outfits, practical items, and soft blankets, but to be surrounded by people who really care about us and our new babies.
We also had a delicious, and very detailed cake made by my mom’s friend with two tiny babies on it to celebrate the new boy and girl in our family.
Below is a photo of me, my MIL, and my mom. They are amazing and have already helped us so much from working around our house, to throwing the party, and buying us a crib set.
Everyone was so busy visiting with others that barely any photos were taken. I’m really glad my great aunt Jessie took the ones you see here.
