DIY Dresser & Nightstand Makeover: Sangria Colored Paint
Our roommate, Dena, has acquired a lot of furniture from friends and family for (wow, that’s a long alliteration of Fs) her new adventure in Seattle. {And BONUS she was just hired last week for a new job closer to her new place!!} We will actually both be working on Mercer Island now which is by Seattle. We celebrated with some Mercer Canyons wine, although it’s not made on Mercer Island. 🙂
I think one of the most fun parts about moving is making a new space all your own. In Dena’s case, it includes new furniture and a new bedroom color scheme.
MATERIALS
- Second-hand wood dresser and nightstand
- Paint: in this case, the color was Sangria and came as a duo primer and paint with a matte finish
- 1.5 inch paint brush
- Paint cloth (aka old sheet or plastic sheeting)
- Rust-Oleum Soft Touch Polyurethane, Half Pint, Matte
- Sander
- 120 grit sand paper
INSTRUCTIONS
1) Move furniture to a well-ventilated area that you don’t mind getting paint on.
2) Use sander and sand paper to rough up the surface a little bit.
3) Choose a fun, bright paint color that will match your room and paint! She used two coats of paint on these pieces of furniture. Let dry for 1 day between coats.
4) Finish with a clear coat of Varathane matte soft touch polyurethane.
5) Install new handles for a finished, modern look.
6) Have someone help you haul it back in to your room and admire your handy work! In this case, the Sangria furniture matched a new gray and white polka dot comforter and teal accents.
